Le film retrace l'élaboration de l'album « Nebraska » de Bruce Springsteen, sorti en 1982, alors qu'il était un jeune musicien sur le point de devenir une vedette mondiale, luttant pour concilier les pressions du succès et les fantômes de son passé. Enregistré sur un magnétophone à quatre pistes dans la chambre de Springsteen à New Jersey, l'album a marqué un moment essentiel de sa vie et est considéré comme l'une de ses œuvres les plus durables - un disque acoustique brut et hanté, rempli d'âmes perdues à la recherche d'une raison de croire.
