Julian (Bryce Gheisar) has struggled to belong ever since he was expelled from his former school. To transform his life, Julian's grandmother (Helen Mirren) finally reveals to Julian her own story of courage — during her youth in Nazi-occupied France, when a boy sheltered her from mortal danger.
Sara (Arielle Glaser) has managed to escape from Nazi forces, when her classmate Julien (Orlando Schwerdt) helps her by convincing his family to hide her in their barn. The two young people find first love in a stunning, magical world of their own creation, while they all do everything in their power to stay alive.
Based on the book by R.J. Palacio.
