  Excellent assessment below; Soundtrack & style were similar to "Requiem for A Dream" . However this was more INTENSELY disturbing & ? I did find myself ,at times , holding my breath & getting tense. At the same time I understand the "1 stars". Be careful what you wish for !!!

  5 stars !! The Substance is unique, intense story of human transformation in modern Los Angeles. Like a cross between David Cronenberg and Michael Crichton, with the prosthetics of Alien. A very interesting, powerful story for the first half. Very well made, it has a lot going for it: Set designs like Stanley Kubrick, Academy level performance by Demi Moore, sound, editing, quirky characters. It switches back and forth between the sleazy Hollywood show business world, and a hallucinatory tread out of the studios into dark passages. It illustrated how women are so pressured to stay beautiful and youthful to the point where we’ll do anything no matter how dangerous. The substance represents Botox, fillers, BBLs, countless injections, ozempic, all these substances that we’re pumping our bodies with in order to be what the world perceives as beautiful. Its f**kin insane movie.

  Starts out stylishly and thoughtfully. Descends into a mess of no plot movement, no character development and finally a grand finale of the most despicable gore, grotesqueness and vomit inducing filth. I walked out I would expect this from two male teenagers like Beavis and Butthead.

  This is a disturbing film. If you are a horror fan, go see it now! If you do not have a strong stomach or are disturbed easy, stay away. This is a very sick film, but very well done.

  While the Actors lowered themselves to give a good performance naked - it was by far the most demeaning movie I have evef seen. I am so surprised Demi Moore lowered herself to this bottomless pit of stupidity.

  Best Performance by Demi Moore. This was probably the most intense film me and the wife watched in quite some time. Never seen anything like it. Went without watching the trailer so was completely caught off guard. There is VERY close up nude scenes throughout out the entire film so just a heads up and can be quite grotesque at times. I love the meaning behind it and the artsiness. There was never a dull moment and Demi Moore killed it , best performance by a female actress.

  This is one of the most absurd, unhinged, deranged, and absolutely best films I've seen. I don't know where to begin... Is it with Demi Moore's career-best, Oscar-worthy role or Dennis Quaid's or Margaret's Qualley's amazing supporting roles? I cannot recommend this film enough! From start to finish, it captivates you with a story that keeps its hidden message out of reach until the final moments. Not only does it explore deep themes of self-love, but it also exposes the relentless pressure Hollywood actors face to meet impossible beauty standards, showing how that environment can turn you into your own worst enemy. Im rooting for DEMI MOORE for BEST ACTRESS
