When successful businessman Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) takes a detour to Hollywood Boulevard to ask for directions, he receives little help. Encountering Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts), a prostitute, Edward gets his directions while also hiring Vivian for the night. The morning after, he decides to hire Vivian for the whole week to escort him to a variety of social events. She agrees, for the price of $3,000 and access to his credit cards.
Although their relationship was supposed to be strictly professional, throughout the week the two share secrets and dates, which creates a closeness between the two. With only a few days left together, Edward must decide if he’s truly interested in Vivian or if it is all just a business deal.
