In the 1980s, Jacob (Steven Yeun) and wife Monica (Yeri Han) move from Korea with their children David (Alan Kim) and Ann (Noel Kate Cho) to the United States in search of their own American Dream.
Although they first live in California, with both of them working in a poultry plant, Jacob decides to settle the family in Arkansas, to live on a 50-acre farm where he'll grow Korean fruit and vegetables. Monica preferred California, because she enjoyed the social life of a big city. The two wind up bickering so much that the children aim paper airplanes at them that say "Don't fight" on them. Monica's outspoken and lively mother Soonja (Yuh-jung Youn) comes to live with the family in Arkansas to provide advice for the parents and to help with the children.
