Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) is a hot-shot car dealer living in Los Angeles with his girlfriend (Valeria Golino). When he receives a call informing him that his estranged father suddenly passed away, he drops everything and travels to Cincinnati to settle his estate.
His impromptu trip leads to the startling discovery that he is entitled to a pittance, while an undisclosed beneficiary is to receive a fortune of $3 million. One thing leads to another, and Charlie soon finds out that he has a brother, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), who is diagnosed with autism and lives in a mental institution. Determined to get more out of the deal, Charlie takes Raymond on a cross-country trip, where the long-lost brothers learn about their forgotten past.
