Julian (Bryce Gheisar) has struggled to belong ever since he was expelled from his former school. To transform his life, Julian's grandmother (Helen Mirren) finally reveals to Julian her own story of courage — during her youth in Nazi-occupied France, when a boy sheltered her from mortal danger.
As the only two Jewish kids in school, Mlle Petitjean (Patsy Ferran) and Julien (Orlando Schwerdt) escape from Nazi forces and hide away in a cottage with Julien's mother (Gillian Anderson). They find first love in a stunning, magical world of their own creation, while they do everything in their power to stay alive.
Based on the book by R.J. Palacio.
