Stanton "Stat" Carlisle (Bradley Cooper), a master manipulator and con artist, arrives in town by bus, looking to join the carnival, where he's intrigued by the words of Clem Hoately (Willem Dafoe) and his mysterious "attraction," which has people questioning whether it is human or beast.
While in town, Stat meets psychiatrist Lilith Ritter (Cate Blanchett), and the two become close, as he looks to improve on his craft and make more money. Teamed up with Lilith, Stat begins to learn that she is probably more dangerous and manipulative than he anticipated, setting him down a path of violence that he must survive.
