Steven (Peter Dinklage), a composer, is suffering from writer's block as he struggles with his latest opera. His wife, therapist Patricia (Anne Hathaway), suggests he get out of the house in order to clear his mind. He winds up at a bar, where he meets a free-spirited tugboat captain named Katrina (Marisa Tomei). He's so inspired that he begins to write an opera based on her.
Meanwhile, Patricia's son Julian (Evan A. Ellison), 18, has fallen for 16-year-old Tereza (Harlow Jane). Tereza's mother happens to be Steven and Patricia’s housecleaner. When Tereza's father Trey (Brian d’Arcy James), a court reporter and weekend Civil War reenactor, finds out that his daughter is dating Julian, he decides to charge the teen with statutory rape.
