Lizzy (Michelle Williams) is a struggling artist who lives and works in Portland. She has an upcoming exhibition that she's working towards, but she has a lot to deal with, including a brother with a mental illness, a job working for her mother at an arts and crafts store and no hot water in her apartment, so she's unable to take a shower.
Her friend Joelle (Hong Chau), also an artist, is her landlord. Jo breezily tells Lizzy she can shower at her place, but Lizzy, an extreme introvert, can't bring herself to do that. Then when Lizzy's cat mauls a pigeon, Jo takes the bird in, but winds up leaving it in Lizzy's care. It all becomes too much for Lizzy to bear.
