Lancashire, 1974. Working-class teenager John (Elliot James Langridge) just doesn't seem to fit in anywhere. His family thinks he's weird and his teacher (Steve Coogan) makes fun of him because he thinks the lyrics John wrote for a love song are cheesy.
When John meets an aspiring DJ named Matt (Joshua Whitehouse), things begin to change. Matt has big dreams and wants to get far away from their dreary industrial town. He introduces John to American soul music, but also to drugs. Soon the two young men are hosting their own club nights, and the former wallflower is flying high. But sooner or later, everyone has to come down.
