Single mother Nana (Jennifer Connelly) is struggling to raise her two sons Ivan (Zen McGrath) and Gully (Winta McGrath) in a small rural town. The youngest son, Gully, is terminally ill. In a last ditch effort to find something to save his life, she takes him to a traveling miracle worker. Ivan brings his pet falcon, who disrupts the proceedings, but it causes Nana to discover that she has the ability to heal. Her discovery, however, comes too late to save Gully.
Two decades later, Ivan (Murphy) is a falconer, with a wife (Oona Chaplin) and baby. A journalist comes to him, wanting information about his long-estranged mother, who is now a healer. Ivan and the journalist trek to the Arctic Circle to find her.
