Mackenzie (Ella Purnell), 14, is sent to stay with her uncle (Brian Geraghty) in Alaska while her mother is in treatment. When her uncle's attention becomes inappropriate and threatening, she becomes afraid of him and runs away. When she tries to get hold of her mother, the girl is told she checked herself out. Mackenzie must she face the dangers of the Alaskan wild, trekking across miles of terrain to find a way back home to Seattle.
Afraid the authorities will return her to her uncle, Mackenzie tries to avoid detection, but has a chance connection with a gruff backpacker named Bartlett (Bruce Greenwood), who's also from Seattle. She decides to follow Bartlett across the rugged frontier, hoping eventually he'll lead her home.
