Hardcastle, a man of wealth, wants his daughter to marry the son of an old friend. Unfortunately, his prospective son in-law Marlow mistakes him for an innkeeper and his daughter as a local barmaid.

However, this turns out to be good news when they find Marlow is too too shy to court ladies of his own class.
